Sister Sarah

I'll always remember the warmth of Sister Sarah who has a special talent for gathering outcast children, giving them space, and validating their sense of worth.

“Bringing in the sheaves/ Bringing in the Sheaves

We shall come rejoicing bringing in the sheaves” —Knowles Shaw

Gathered by her side like a lost lamb

Sister Sarha took me in her arms

hugged the holy ghost from my ribcage

where indigestion felt like demons

lurking, abiding time, seeking

ideal moment to emerge in a haze.

Assuring the safety of her congregation

She wore a rosary about her waist

like a belly dancer’s coin belt

individual beads slapped my face

insuring penance through pain

exorcising Satan’s grasp on my soul.

Marshalling me in sacred directions

years later I learned Sarah shucked

her holy orders, wildly fled on an acolyte’s

arm, then married a wayward priest; her

maternal instinct overwhelming and acute

she birthed and nurtured flights of angles.
