She Was Dying

Death is painful for everyone. How do we deal with it? Is assisted suicide an option?

————

At home and they knew it.

She was afraid of the pain.

She begged him to help her

to ease her way out.

He couldn’t promise a thing.

She was his world,

so he waited and waited,

hoping that she’d change her mind.

Death was a shadow

that spread from the corner,

held her in ice and in fog.

As she lay gasping,

with tears in his eyes,

he gave her the poison she wanted.

They intertwined fingers

as she faded out,

then he helped himself to her drink.

Now they’re together,

still hand in hand,

on a road they both took in the dark.
