She Saved Me
/Sometimes trauma can take a terrific turn.
————
I cut myself and covered the area in aloe.
It hurt so badly, I felt nauseous and hollow.
The pain spikes tended to ebb and flow.
Finally, I hollered out of my window.
“Dad, come inside, I need you now.”
“You’ll need to stop milking the cow.”
He ran to me as fast as time would allow.
“Joe, we’ll get you to the clinic, somehow.”
Our old truck didn’t work, and we had little money.
Then I remembered I had recently sold some honey.
I told him to look in the hollow of the pecan tree.
Dad found the cash and then searched for the tractor key.
He drove us quickly to the clinic downtown.
We were lucky to get there just after sundown.
A young nurse came out to us in her nightgown.
She saved me and turned my life upside down.
