Shadow People

This is an observation

————

Busy you and busy me

We’re so busy we don’t see

The homeless people ev’rywhere

We don’t notice and don’t care

Go to church but not believe

And keep the blessings we receive

Only thinking of ourselves

Not a thought for someone else

Crippled body mind and soul

Against the rain and wind and cold

A blanket tent and nothing more

A soldier comes home from war

Mother and child huddle close

Drifting from pillar to post

Each day the same as the last

No sail upon their mast

Hopeless addicts in despair

In a world that doesn’t care

Living from high to low

The only life that they know

Their horizon but feet away

From the place where they stay

As but shadows in their own land

Living day to day hand to hand

Unnoticed like the shadow at our feet

These souls living on the streets

If we would but stop to think

We could also be on the brink

And find ourselves among those

Shadow People with tattered hopes
