Sacrifice

Christianity is fair game for criticism and mocking in a way other religions are not. Of course, perhaps many Christians are hypocritical in a way adherents to other religions are not; thus inviting the criticism and mockery. However, the difference between being religious and being a disciple of Jesus is often foundational.

Many of us feel overwhelmed when we consider how to follow Christ. We're all in for His love and grace; it's the self-denial none of us likes. But there is purpose in the denial of self, it isn't just hardship without cause. For every time we deny our flesh, we confirm our obedience to God.

To pick up our cross is to embrace sacrifice. For Jesus, that was sacrificial death. For most of us it's not so dramatic, but a sacrifice nonetheless. Sacrifice isn't always hard or painful. In fact, sometimes it is simply mundane; our last cup of sugar given to a neighbor, or sharing our umbrella in the rain.

We are selfless in small ways every day, by giving our time to those we love most. And the same act can be sacrificial by giving our time to someone we don't.

Selflessness is often overlooked when it isn't loud or dramatic. But unseen sacrifice is like forgotten treasures; sweet memories safely stored in the attic.

Walking with Jesus is simple when we stop resisting God. Then embrace the truth with humility; we were made by love to give love; the rest is only facade.
