Prepondering A First Date
When we’re with another
and glance at each other,
just what do we think we’ll discover?
Kinda tall? Rather short?
Is this someone I ort
want to be with, or not the right sort?
Lots of makeup or none?
Coiffed with Mohawk or bun?
Does that smile harbor anger or fun?
Is the face a bit thin?
Is there more than one chin?
Does one eye or the other turn in?
(Or perhaps they both do,
and when looking askew
you’re perplexed—do they see two of you?)
Is that right leg too long?
Is that arm really strong?
Does that line mean white tighties or thong?
Was that tattoo a wreath?
Is that fur underneath
a large nose above rows of brown teeth?
Just plain stupid or smart?
With a cold or warm heart?
Scent of flowers, or jungle, or fart?
Is there sag here and there?
Is the pate a bit bare?
(What on earth is that smell in the air?)
Does that wrist have a twist?
Did I notice the gist
or get lost wond’ring what I have missed?
(Some fine parts here and there,
we’re reluctant to stare
and display an air of laissez-faire.)
Maybe poor, maybe rich.
Gentle person or bitch
who’ll relieve or may cause a bad itch?
Since we met through a friend
whose vows met a bad end,
is it likely we’ll follow that trend?
Is there something amiss;
hidden flaws I should dis?
Could this be the right time for a kiss?
Would we lose? Could we win?
What a state that we’re in!
Should we stop now—or should we begin?
Is this the right one?
Should we fling into fun?
Could it be we’ve already begun?
It’s just so hard to know
that first moment or so
whether this one’s a win, place or show.
