Our Streetlight
/To the tune “Grandfather’s Clock” (1876, by Henry Clay Work)
————
My Grandfathers’ lamp was too tall for the house,
so he put it outside by the street.
Much brighter by far than the old man himself,
it would light up the night for our feet.
When that streetlight went on, we all knew the eve was gone,
and we headed back home by the score,
but we’d stop … short ... just for one more look
’fore we closed the door.
