Of Ill Omen

Dark wet skies above Detroit

Grow darker with a flood of

Darkest birds in migration.

Caw caw caw caw caw

Moving signifier of ill omen

Adding to already dreary times.

Caw caw caw caw caw

One breaks formation, avian rebel

Flies on a path ignored by the others.

The nearest boneyard awaits—

He rests on top of a slab of

Rain-soaked, sculpted marble, a tombstone.

Ebony beak excessively taps the smooth, hard surface.

Does the quiet of his surroundings disturb him?

Or is he summoning someone.

If so, will someone receive his message?

The dark bird alone has assumed many roles

In the eyes of mankind.

Scavenger,

Carrion-eater,

Living bridge between death and life,

Terrifying image in drunken poet's dreams.

In this instance,

He is a messenger of sorts.

Harbinger of ill omen.

Something sinister awaits those who do sinister deeds.

This is the messenger's purpose & the proclamation

Stated without a need for words:

What was wrong shall be made right.

Someone just heard the message—
