Margarita
/Inspired by the 1950 song “Mona Lisa,” lyricist Ray Evans, composer Jay Livingston, and my favorite recording by Nat King Cole.
————
Margarita, Margarita, men have made you.
You’re the lovely lady with the salty grin.
Is it only ’cause we’re lonely that we bade you
for the vapid state that we find ourselves in?
You will tempt us with tequila, Margarita,
telling us that we can hide our broken hearts.
In our dreams you always leave us at your doorstep,
then we lie there, and we die there;
slightly chilled, both sweet and sour, Magarita,
leaving us behind, besotted, blotted farts.
