Jeff Bezos, Amazon, and...

Jeff Bezos, Amazon, and The Beast

Technology is moving so fast it's hard to keep up. For those who have known nothing else, it is much more convenient than it is suspicious. But for those of us who are, shall we say more seasoned, and who grew up in the Cold War era where there was a spy around every corner, it can be pretty frightening.

“These things I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

John 16:33

“He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.” -Revelation 13:16-17

News Story:

A Wisconsin technology firm has begun offering employees microchip implants as a form of identification for everything from unlocking company doors, to buying lunch from the cafeteria, with a simple scan.

This news item shouldn't be shocking, people have been talking about implanting microchips in humans, both knowingly and unknowingly, since the first microchip came on the market. In fact, microchips have routinely been implanted in patients and used as power sources for medical devices controlling epilepsy and heartbeats.

Still, it stirred my thoughts, always a dangerous thing. I thought about how many people associate technology with end times and with the Beast. I never quite understand the reasoning, but maybe that’s because each person has their own reasoning. While I was running all of this around my brain, suddenly, I had an epiphany. In a flash of intuition, I clearly realized that the beast isn’t a person, it’s Amazon.

Of course, that effectively makes it Jeff Bezos, but that’s kind of the point. Everyone doesn’t, and probably couldn’t, love Jeff Bezos. But everyone loves instant gratification. We have instant email, instant text messaging, and instant cooking by microwave. But for instant gratification, none of those compares to America's love affair with Amazon’s overnight shipping. And as you read this, Amazon is working to decrease their shipping times by making their drones more reliable. They have tested drone delivery “in selected areas” and they look promising.

This, without even mentioning the technology that is being developed and will continue to be developed in the future. Whatever we may say about Mr. Bezos, there is no denying that he has tapped into America’s addiction to convenience. He is betting that as disposable incomes grow, America's dependence on overnight delivery will grow in tandem. While he, of course, works on same hour delivery. I think Mr.Bezos can be confident in his future.

Shortly after reading the article about the Wisconsin technology company and the microchip, I saw an interesting commercial on television. It was an ad to introduce us to Amazon’s pharmacy services. We can now have our prescriptions filled by Amazon and they guarantee overnight delivery of our medication. WOW!

I was so taken aback, my mind was blank for long seconds. Finally, I thought, “Wow, Amazon and prescription drugs. They may soon squeeze out every other retailer, including Walmart who is on the same mission and racing Amazon to the finish line. The future is looking promising for Jeff Bezos, if not for civilization.

As I played with all the different parts of this in my mind, microchips in humans, Amazon squeezing out other retailers, and Jeff Bezos being the beast, suddenly, it was as if I was watching a movie in my mind. Amazon had taken over all of retail and was the sole purveyor of EVERYTHING. In order to purchase from Amazon you were required to implant a microchip in your hand containing all of their personal and financial information.

It dovetailed nicely with what John said in the book of Revelations about the Beast. “He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.” -Revelation 13:16-17

Staying with this theme, I tried to follow it to its logical conclusion. If Amazon is the sole purveyor of everything, they too will be the sole employer for everyone. I wondered if we should be preparing for a future in which Amazon, or Jeff Bezos, to be more precise, will own us all...But for God.
