I Wish We Could...

I Wish We Could Laugh Again

This is my first Mother’s Day without my mother.

—————

I wish my mother could see my new haircut, so fluffy and neat. She always said, “My beautiful daughter!” even when I was unwashed. I wish my mother could read my new collection of poems about her. It’s a life story beginning with her cowgirl days. She read an early draft and told me, “There are so many mistakes!” My father and aunt helped me get my facts straight. I wish we could go for rides to look for deer with my father, an eagle eye. I wish we could go for walks at the mall and drink strawberry and pineapple smoothies. I wish I could give my mother a hug and tell her, “I love you.” I wish we could laugh again.
