Grow from Your Past

These western cowgirls grew up together but later grew apart. When one was in trouble, the other was able to help save her life.

We grew up on horseback in the northwest.

Riding horses and drinking beer; we were the best.

But crazy cowgirl adventures had to be put to rest.

Sue and I had a rough and tough rodeo past.

The first few years were really a blast.

After a horrific experience, I got away from her fast.

She’d say: “All you want to do is keep controlling me.”

I’d counter: “We need to stop drinking beer and switch to tea.”

She would shriek, stamp her feet, and then flee.

Five years later I had a case come across my desk.

When I saw the victim’s name, I knew it would be a mess.

My boss knew my past and why I was assigned this case is anyone’s guess.

I examined the case thoroughly and tried to read between the lines.

So many arrests, drug usage, and a vast mountain of fines.

I projected that her speech would be filled with pleads and whines.

Sue was at the bottom and deserved to be raised up.

She looked like a despondent and abandoned pup.

“Sue, I’m getting you help, please take a sip from the cup.”

Once she realized who I was, she looked at me with love in her eyes.

“Tammy, you were always the cowgirl who was wise.”

The guards reassured her and I started the process to help her rise.
