From Stupor to Sunrise

Warm rays spilled

through the window.

Mom managed paper pushers

at an accounting firm

while her tipsy third husband

drank dark beer,

munching on aged nuts,

treating their home

like a seedy watering hole.

For him, it might have been better than

what came after picking up Mom—

he crossed double yellow lines

and crashed into the guardrail.

Mom survived. He survived.

The people in the other car died

before the police arrived.

Mom left him,

and the cops guided him

to the back of a police car.

The pictures made the paper,

and Mom woke from the stupor.

Now she counseled people

who couldn’t hold their liquor,

because the cry in their hearts to change

peeked through the fog

of altruistic appeals.

Decisions made a mess of fate.
