For Jacob

The United States has a long standing issue with social justice; there is none. Among the illustrations of this problem is the number of unarmed black men shot, and often killed, by police officers who are not held accountable.

————

Another black man was shot down in the street today.

His name is Jacob and he is someone's dad.

Seven shots to the back was all it took

For the shooter to become part of an unholy fad.

One of the kids watching seemed so young,

I couldn't help wondering what she felt.

I got my answer when I heard her cry out,

"Who are we supposed to call for help?"

It's time to stop this cycle of hate

In which we have all been engaged.

A black man killed, a promise made,

Cut the scene, and reset the stage.

This is the world we've created for our kids.

A world in which they cannot feel safe.

For, safety isn't what they see on their screens,

But neighbors, spraying one another with mace.

Once we made a promise to future generations,

We promised to keep marching for all of us.

Clearly, the promise has not survived over time,

And clearly, we've violated their trust.

We can't go on pretending we're not at fault,

Nor can we claim we just didn't know.

For, wherever, unequal justice exists,

It's fertile ground for hatred to grow.

We've abdicated our responsibility

For the promises that we made long ago.

For what have we done in the meantime,

But complain then accept the status quo?

This isn't just a black or white thing;

Nor, is it Latino, straight, or gay.

Rather this is about who has the power,

And why we who have it, must step up today.

We must stop asking who will end this madness,

Stop wondering who we can trust.

For, this cannot be stopped by one person,

To right this wrong will require all of us.
