Empowerment

The dictionary says

That to empower another

Is to grant them authority to act

But does this not imply

The grantor being the greater

And the grantee the lessor?

And assume that authority to act

Is something that can be given

Or taken away -

A privilege

As opposed to a right?

Do not all persons

Possess the right to act?

And the taking away of that right be

Oppression?

Some would say, by contrast

That to empower another

Is to enable them to act to their potential

Does this not reinforce

The innate equality of each of us?

Where we each possess the same rights

The same potential

Only awaiting the power of those rights and potential

To be unleashed?

And so is not empowerment

Promotion of the self-actualization

Of each of us?

Being thus:

Equity

Opportunity

And Freedom
