Creative Writing Characters

A creative writing classroom exercise allows Princess Lida to learn the importance behind an author creating a character

Inside the school where Paulie attended, a peaceful activity took place as students read their creative writing assignments.

“And when the monster lost energy, the aristocratic royal Prince drank Gatorade before defeating the enemy. The End,” Becky Sue recited her paper and waited for supportive friendly applause. After hearing the proper sendoff, she took her seat.

“Excuse me why did the monster have to lose its power?” Princess Lida whispered.

“Princess Lida, it’s a character, it does not exist, I made it up,” Becky Sue replied, “why are you afraid the aristocratic royal Prince only protects nice village girls and not fellow family members.”

Since a classmate started their presentation, the teacher requested Becky Sue and Princess Lida to be quiet. Listening to authority both warring factions fell silent and allowed more to communicate.

During the class change, the heated verbal discussion reignited, “Princess Lida, you need to understand when we villagers sit down and create characters, we are only warning you, the power in the land to be careful.”

“So, you made a monster losing their energy to help me?”

“Yes, to help you so in real life you won’t make a dumb mistake and die.”

“Then it is my proper responsibility to say I am sorry, but monsters sometimes are good, their legends may win battles,”

“Only depends how the writer wants the character to be,”

“Or not to be,” Princess Lida added.

“That is the question,” Becky Sue continued while the pair walked together to the next class.

Later in the day before darkness invaded Princess Lida hiked through the woods towards her castle. Staying on the path nothing really seemed scary until branches started to converse, barking the tree lingo that next year would be studied.

“I do not know your language,” the pedestrian traveler exclaimed, “and I am not going to give you any bother.”

As the sound increased Princess Lida’s gait grew faster until a dragon jumped out yelling, “I am out of energy, and I am thirsty.”

Princess Lida let out a scream hoping the call would be heard by someone. Suddenly, a heroic figure emerged, “I am aristocratic royal Prince Paulie, and I am here to protect the Princess,”

“I am thirsty and if I get parched my mouth will spew flames,”

“Well, we cannot have that,” aristocratic royal Prince Paulie shouted, “here have my Gatorade.”

When the dragon grabbed the bottle the costume head came off revealing Becky Sue, “Becky Sue, you scared me,”

“It’s only a character,” Becky Sue reminded. And then the three all let out a trusting laugh, “you two are such characters,” Princess Lida mentioned.

“And that is why we are escorting the Princess back to her chambers,”

“Where I can dream of a real Prince saving me,”

“That is correct,” Becky Sue confirmed, “the fantasy character you want in your story.”
