Blame Me

Joleen didn’t see me,

but my gaze pierced

through her facade.

I saw her light a coffin nail

and blow smoke rings in the dark.

She placed the ciggy

between both teeth,

and lifted her chin to blink

as though stardust had stung her pupils.

Joleen returned her gaze to the present

and puffed more of her cancer stick.

Joleen wrapped her hair around her neck,

and searched for someone to blame.

She targeted me with her sparkling eyes

and a serene grin.

I’d confess to the mess I made

in the hole that Joleen dug.

None of this was my doing.

I’ll admit it all as long as Joleen

admits she told me

she loved me last night.

And nothing on this earth

could erase that rush.

I’d be lying if I said

it’d never happen

unless we happened,

but we did,

and there we were.

Joleen leaned in,

and I inched closer

and gently pressed my lips

to her as I ran my fingers

through her long, red hair.

We kissed, and she blushed

for even thinking to blame me.
