A Secret Love

This is not the 1953 Doris Day version of "Secret Love" from "Calamity Jane," music by Sammy Fain, lyrics by Paul Francis Webster.

————

A secret love will rarely go unknown—

their secrets are not meant for them to own—

for rumors spread much faster than the wings

which open to whomever their love sings.

How many of his partners do they know?

Co-workers, roommates, their own loves also?

Among the many others that he shared,

do any of them know if others cared?

How many other partners have they known?

Our stories about secret loves have shown

that lovers love to share the songs they sing

regardless of how jealousy may sting—

the very sting by which I have been stung

because of all their trysts I’m not among.
