Traveling Broke

Looking and feeling like a jobless traveler.

At least with the looks I am getting

are making me feel this way

on this little life's journey.

I have been walking for what seems like years,

even though I know the reality,

that it has been only maybe a month.

To be honest it is all starting to blur together.

Most people may have thought this was an odd plan.

To pack a knapsack and put out my thumb,

to see where it would lead too.

My scattered thoughts as my only company.

The people that pass by just stare

or look away with guilt or shame,

looking up and down at the soiled jeans

that hold stains of ground sleep,

the dirt on me that gas station's water will not wash.

They drive by where I am standing,

holding a tattered sign looking for change

for food before I find my shelter for the night

and then move on to the next town.

Each day that moves on

the walk gets longer.

No one is offering a drive to me

and the haggard smell that follows.

I am starting to realize

that I did not bring enough on this excursion

and I am spending more time

here in each town's intersections holding my sign,

begging for whatever I can get

for my thinning bones.

Sadly, I do not feel bad

for the position I have put myself in.

My mind is clearer with each new site.

I do feel for the onlookers

and the dull confusion in them I see.

Each time I say to myself

I may be traveling broke

but compared to the skeletons I see

I am much richer for it.
