Tension

The pastor's wife. She's avoiding direct eye contact with me. And the pastor. I had the feeling he wanted to ask me something, but because of the crowd around him, he's bottled it all up.

Despite the noise of church members exchanging pleasantries after service, my ears monitored the steps of the pastor's wife as they head into the church building, followed by those of the pastor as they return to the tent outside.

She whispers something to him. He tries to look in my direction without creating the impression that his wife had signaled him to do so. There seems to be a lot those two want to say to me but the opportunity hasn't presented itself  and this bulk of bottled feelings gives off bad energy which makes me uneasy whenever I'm around them.

I rise to leave, sensing scrutinizing looks flashing in my direction. I know what they are all thinking, but I shall pretend I haven't heard the rumours circulating in church. I shall continue to smile and be nice to everyone.
