Spine

A poem inspired by scoliosis

————

Every story has a twist

A turn in the tale

Gazing at the straight metal rod in the mist

Wondering if the curve will lead her to fail

A shoulder jutting forwards

Her hips sitting on a slope

The pain she’d escape if she could

Striving for the symmetry that would help her cope

And just like that the butterfly takes flight

Embracing her vertebrae as part of her world

She stands tall, drawn up to her height

Shaking off her shame of the spine that curled
