Cold Coffee and Ginger Snaps

When there's nothing left to adore.

————

Yes, it’s come to that.

When this cup is drunk, there is no more.

The ginger snaps are down to two. I gotta go shopping. I hate shopping. It’s a dreary business but it's gotta be done. I’ve managed to arrange the supply trek to an every other week chore. Still, it’s tiresome, even if it only comes ‘round every other week.

I wish I had a staff to take care of this sort of domestic drudgery.

Maybe just one person would do, someone who could manage food supply, yardwork, auto repair, or whatever other bothersomness that comes along. I could use an executive secretary; a girl Friday who could hire help as needed, and schedule whatever needs scheduling.

Oh yes, I had that earlier, first Mom, then several girlfriends, then a wife, then another wife. Now I’m on my own — without female can-do-ness.

I hire guys for jobs that require energy or training, like yardwork, plumbing, electrical repair, and such. I wish I had a lady to come ‘round and see to the shopping, seasonal decoration, plant watering, housekeeping, check balancing, and all the other day-to-day things that need doing.

Ladies don’t get nearly enough recognition for their nurturing grace.

Women turn houses into homes. Men, on their own, don’t have homes — only caves where they shelter, store tools, and sleep. I’m as guilty as any other man, with the only difference being I’m conscious of my shortcomings.

Ladies can turn the most dismal cave into a bright, clean, and altogether charming domicile. Men can only stand in awe and wipe the soles of their shoes before entering.

Women are natural nurturers of home, children, plants, and relationships. Men are naturally inclined to provide and protect the ladies and all their good work — although they’re not inclined to help with maintaining any of it.

One man plus one woman equals one full human — I miss my other half. I’m widowed, old, and tired.

Now, I’m down to cold coffee and ginger snaps.
