A Cross To Bear
As children, we all played a role in our family dynamics. This is based on feelings and I thoughts I had as the family peace maker.
————
If I ask too much or I’m selfish
Would you decide I’m a cross to bear?
Would I still be a pleasure to have around
If I didn’t always do what’s fair?
If I put myself first would your approval fade?
Would you hold me then at arm’s length?
Would I still be your favorite child
If I took off this mask of strength.
If I didn’t make peace and give in to you,
Would you wonder why I’ve changed?
Would you say what’s wrong with Linda?
She surely is acting strange.
I’m afraid that your love is conditional.
Attached to unknown strings.
So, I desperately seek your approval
For the sense of belonging it brings.
I try to keep everyone happy,
Putting myself at the end of the list.
I need so much to be needed,
Afraid if I’m not, I'll cease to exist.
I can never risk being selfish,
I make sure that I’m always fair.
So afraid that if I’m not careful
I’ll be a cross you’re unwilling to bear.
