According to various Religions a person receives, what they give. When a person performs good actions the return of the action is favourable. Sometimes the return of one's actions maybe felt in the next birth, just as this birth is the consequence of previous births.

The understanding of the law of karma and how it impacts on our next births is a too simple a concept for most people to grasps. People like concepts to be complex so the responsibility of one’s  actions can be denied, minimalized or past over to someone else. Hence allowing for wrong actions to be justified in the minds a people who fail to do the right thing.

When the law of karma is aherd to than life is black and white.
