Wrong Turn
I took an accidental turn while I was out the other night
It seems that I had turned to left, when I should have turned to right.
My attention was distracted and I paid no heed to course
Then lack of bearings, realized, cast a sense of slight remorse.
I looked about and strained my eyes, no trusted landmarks there,
My vision filled with shadowed sights and feelings of despair.
It only took a moment to digest what eyes had spied
Laying there before me was the place where dreams had died.
Collected into piles of every shape and every size
Some were made of hopes and trusts while some were made of lies.
Tattered thoughts and wishes hung in shreds from long dead trees
Whose branches seemed like reaching arms embracing unheard pleas.
The air was thick and somnolent, the light was soft and gray
The smoldering piles of other’s lives, unmoving where they lay.
I dared not venture further as I tried to quell my fear
That if I looked too closely I might find my own dreams near
The ones I still held onto, ones I felt I could achieve
The ones that keep me going on, the ones that I believe.
I quickly turned my back on forlorn forest and its plain
And raced without direction trying to shed its veil of pain
I left a path of sorrow, marked by tears along its side
In hopes to never find, again, that place when next I ride.
