Thought How He Looked Callow

This is a fragment from the emotion of a memorial service. The death of a loved one, a father. How time can perhaps alter a man from innocence and inexperienced. Remembering a man who lived a life and a very trying last few days before death on hospice.

On the day of the memorial service his college roommate studied the b and w blow up photograph of Don in his navy whites when I look at him the roommate said I think how callow he looks callow I asked yes he said and I remembered our zoom call from the icu water he said having just regained consciousness 24 hours after the mi that had arrested his heart and the subsequent chest compressions by the paramedics in front of his wife who was shocked but in a different way and the shock of the defibrillator one shock two shock until his heart had resumed beating cause of death kidney failure bladder cancer pneumonia covid why he said and we could not give him an answer and I remember looking up the word callow later and understanding why his college roommate thought he looked callow at 19.
