The Rusty Old Can

In the corner of the old shed

Pushed way in the back

Sits a rusty old can

Next to a tattered backpack

Its label has worn off

There are dents in its side

It is covered in dust

As if trying to hide

A lonely, old man

Sorts and cleans out debris

The can's been tucked far in the back

Where the old man can't see

He's been working for days

Searching for his treasures

Now there's an urgency he feels

Having noticed his tremors

If it gets too progressed

He may not recall much

So he's looking for that something

That will keep him in touch

His searching continues

For another few days

The piles of debris

Are scattered every which way

He finally finds that old

backpack

And his heart leaps with joy

For he finds, too, that old can

Set aside for his boy

He takes them inside

And sits down next to them

His emotions are running so high

Tears fill his eyes to the brim

From inside the old backpack

He pulls out a white dress

It's now yellowed and musty

But he loves it, nonetheless

His trembling hands reach out

Removing the top on the can

Inside are old photos

Of a woman and a man

They're of him in his tuxedo

His wife in her white wedding gown

The tears floating in his eyes

All finally tumble down

He sits for quite a long time

Quietly lost in his thoughts

He hopes these treasures will help him

Should his mind tie in knots
