Petri Dish Beneath a Sepia Sun
Will we darken our skies so that only the simplest life forms survive?
————
A million millennia can’t meet the demand
for us to re-equip and re-evolve as we had planned.
But time waits for no one; it moves on as before,
and once it has passed it closes every door—
only yeast would now rise above the bones we left behind.
Would it leave a watermark of heights reached by mankind?
Smoldering embers emit soot as fuels deplete
and the atmosphere becomes too dark for ground and sun to meet
but the earliest and smallest forms of life maintained their ground,
and Earth, renewed as petri dish, is where they will be found.
