Once Upon A Starry…
Once Upon A Starry Night
Her first thought was that it happened during that enchanting twilight moment just before slipping beyond the perceptions of awareness into and under the spell of sleep. But, did it?
Never before had anything felt so real...the intoxicating bouquet of the wheat fields, the mesmerizing, all-enveloping blue-black of the night sky; the puffy, pillow-clouds; black birds cawing their message that only the very wise know to heed; cool damp grass smooshing about her bare feet. And, over there, standing alone and abandoned beneath the Mulberry Tree...a simple wooden easel.
The light illuminating the easel and the area around it compelled her forward. Whispers, hitching rides on gentle breezes, drifted through, encouraging her senses’ swift ascension to full vibration. This she experienced. It happened. She still was unable to discern what the whispers were telling her but trusted she soon might.
With every step she became lighter and lighter until she was somehow mysteriously at one with the atmosphere. At the same time as she was seemingly disappearing, a technicolor light form began to manifest at the easel. Spellbound, she watched as the light being, taking on the visage of a great, fluorescent beam of a man, took up a brush and, dipping it into brilliant, glowing paints, began to create a soul-capturing masterpiece splashed with radiant color whirls.
Suddenly, the crows' caws sounded with increasing intensity. (There was a reason she was here.) The atmosphere became dark and heavy as her light friend gave way to tragic weeping, muting the brilliance he had been radiating. It was heartbreaking to witness but through the tears the words found their voice - she could hear them distinctly now.
“The sadness will last forever.”
She recognized them. They had been his last words.
Words that, validating his self-prophecy, tortured him still.
She knew now why she was here. It was her divine responsibility and privilege to be the one to tell him. How could he not know how loved he was? This dear soul had suffered so long.
“Mr. Van Gogh…” His grief blocked her attempts to grasp his attention. He was unable to hear beyond the prison of his sorrow.
“Vincent!” Slowly, he turned toward her.
Please hear me, Vincent. Love flowed through her to find its way to him. You’re allowing the grief you knew in life to rob you of the joy for which you sacrificed and fought so hard - and won! If you will just open yourself to it, you’ll feel the love of countless people throughout countless years.”
His light, no longer frantic, now slowly pulsating, stayed with her.
“Only 6 years ago, in 2017, your painting, Laboureur Dans Un Champ (Plowman in a Field) sold at auction for $111 million dollars!”
Her passion gushed while his calmed to a soft gold…”Your paintings are priceless! World-wide! There is a museum named after you in Amsterdam: The Van Gogh Museum, founded by your nephew Vincent Willem van Gogh!
You are revered as the most beloved artist of all time, Vincent! It’s all come to fruition, what you so mightily desired: your heart reached out through your paintings and touched our hearts.
There was even a hit song written about you and referencing Starry Night, entitled, ‘Vincent!’”
His now serene light expanded to include her as if in a soft, warm hug.
“You always knew what mattered most of all...Remember your words:
‘If I am worth anything later, I am worth something now. For wheat is wheat, even if people think it is a grass in the beginning.’”
Gently, the scene where she’d just experienced so much evaporated and both she and her precious new friend returned to their former realities carrying with them an other-worldly peace.
Far exceeding the parameters of a dream, a message had been delivered and received! A truly strange occurrence and... so much more… which she discovered the next morning when she woke to a dazzling greeting bursting forth from her garden: Huge sunflowers radiating angel-powered warmth and sunlit smiles. Never mind the fact that she’d never planted sunflowers...she knew who did!
