Final Voyage
Somehow they all evade me
Faces, names, accolades…
(they must be too busy
stuffing other hungry mouths)
far less vile than mine,
as no one smells
more desperate than I,
so perhaps they’re keeping
their distance?…and let’s face it,
sometimes it’s just too late
to fix what’s been broke…
sure, everyone talks about fate,
but we all have the same fate-
which is unequivocally predictable
minus the particulars that land us
in urns or the ground or dispersed
in the wind…its’ obvious, really,
unless you look the other way
compressing your life
into tidy little sums
of papery importance
and rants of jagged air
orchestrating calendars
with no end in sight
until a dark hum
spirals from life’s membrane
all pungent and foul
oozing all the uselessness
we didn’t know was there
leaving us with one final voyage…
isn’t life beautiful?
