Call

After my Mother's passing in 2010, my Father sunk into deep depression... isolated himself and neglected self care.

————

You don’t call and seldom answer the phone,

“It’s painful to stand-up from the reclining chair.”

Keep the phone on the cushion by your side, please!

Lies between us: devouring food, rising glucose,

ingrown toenails, bleeding cracks on feet you can’t

reach with stiff muscles, refusing a medical bracelet,

Short breath and cold sweat can kill you... use it!

“Ahh, what do you know about life?” Father himself

as an emissary above the rubble of Holy Land telling

sacred stories to make a point. Can you think of one

describing your attitude… “You have no empathy!”

Not for your death wish, I said. Thirty-years caregiver

to Mother robbed Father of an impressive career

as chief investigator at the police force and a senior

lecturer at the university; “God had another plan. . . !”
