Breakdown Lovers
Nancy shook with sobs,
leaving my house before
reaching the door.
She turned the key,
but the engine cylinders sparked
and knocked as bones shake
in the presence of a crush,
as white smoke hissed
through the hood,
over an autumn evening.
Nancy hated that car almost
more than she despised
the thought of losing what we had,
especially this close to September.
But more than friends,
she feared we’d never be.
Whenever I caught wind of her presence,
silhouettes danced in my stomach.
I approached her car.
I saw her lips form naughty words.
I motioned for her to roll down the window.
She rolled down the back window
as nerves controlled her executive function.
“Other window, Nancy.” I folded my lips under my teeth and then gave a comforting grin.
“This car has so many different buttons,” Nancy said in her flustered tone.
“Do you need…”
“Know anything about cars, dude?”
“Why? Are you asking to ride me?”
Nancy buried her face in her hands, trembling with a bashful chuckle. “I’m a Christian. A virgin. So absoloutely…yes!”
“You said it like you were attaching conditions to it.” I paused and scratched the back of my neck.
“Only if you promise.”
“We can use my Dad’s condoms.”
“Your mom and dad use…” Nancy moved her head from side to side. “I don’t think I want to know.”
“Back to the promise.”
“I’ll sleep with you if you promise to love me.”
A smile tugged at the corner of my mouth.
“What is it?”
“I already do,” I said. “I already love you.”
