An Eager Minor Leaguer

The MLB season opened on March 31st. Some fans will never give up on their favorite team—or favorite player.

————

She wasn’t lonely—

I’d been past first base

and wasn’t the only

to show or to place.

Down hills toward her dale

then suddenly dumped.

There’d be no sale;

this player was umped!

She made her own calls

at strike two, not strike three,

saying “You’ll need more balls

before scoring with me!”

When she yelled “You’re Out!”

as I hoped for “You’re in!”

She left no doubt

of no yang for my yin.

She plays her own bookie

and scouts many teams,

but I was a rookie

in her headlight beams.

“You wide-eyed lost deer,”

(they were locked where they would),

“Hold onto my beer

while I dump you for good.”

So, back to the dugout—

I never reached hers.

For me, one more rout,

and the loss that infers.

She still isn’t lonely—

I still hope to play

though I’m not her only

fan watching each day.
